This week, SASSA grants Older Persons payment so as to provide financial assistance for more than 7.8 million aged beneficiaries. Since grants are being paid for the month of August 2025, increases are made in all the grant amounts, and therefore, pensioners should use all means possible to tune into the payment dates to withdraw funds without coming across any inconveniences. The following are a few tips, payment dates, new rates, and other features to ensure that payments are never delayed.
Payment Schedule for August 2025
Payment of Older Persons Grantees is being done by SASSA with the purpose of timely provision of support to the seniors. The confirmed payment dates for August 2025 are as follows:
- Older Persons Grant: Tuesday, 5 August 2025
- Disability Grant: Wednesday, 6 August 2025
- Child Support and Other Grants: Thursday, 7 August 2025
- Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant: 25 – 30 August 2025 (rolling basis)
Payments on approval shall be made early by direct deposit into bank accounts or onto SASSA gold cards from 5 August, while cash payments will be claimable from designated paypoints, such as Pick n Pay and Shoprite. Beneficiaries are able to check their payment status at srd.sacca.gov.za by inputting their ID and registered phone number or can call 0800 60 10 11.
Changes in Grant Rates
On account of price variation, the Older Persons Grant underwent changes into new pay scales from April 2025:
- 60-74 years: R2,315/per month
- Above 75 years: R2,335/per month
The increase made in July 2025 came as the rise of R125, with the inflation rate at 5.2 percent, intended to assist with continually increasing costs of essentials-especially their food (R800 to 1,200/per month) and electricity bills. The grant supports elderly households, primarily those in rural areas where 55.5% of the population is below the poverty line, according to World Bank data.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must be South African citizens, permanent residents, or registered refugees, above 60 years, with maximum income of R8,070 for the single and R16,140 for married. Assets should not go beyond R1,372,800 and R2,745,600, respectively.
Applicants must not depend on any other grants funded by SASSA either. The ID number in question must have 13 digits. The recent verification exercise by SASSA in June 2025, whereby some 210,000 grants were suspended, should make it clear that any changes in the personal original particulars of applicants should be updated at all times.
Tips to Ensure That You Receive Payments on Time
Never allow a grant to be lost following these guidelines:
- Check for Payment: See when money is payable to you at srd.sassa.gov.za or call the SASSA helpline.
- Update Your Details: Make sure that your details are updated on services.sassa.gov.za or at a SASSA office for payments to be issued.
- In Terms of Security: There should either be bank direct transfers or SASSA card payments at the payment points, for cash payments are not advisable.
- Avoid Crowds: Collect money a few days after the 5th of August.
- Beware Of Scams: Go firm only to official SASSA channels (@OfficialSASSA on X) and report any suspicious events on 083 277 2141.
Maximizing Grant Benefits
SASSA wants to teach grant beneficiaries budgeting for essentials such as rent, food, and health care. Grant beneficiaries can be taught financial literacy at their community centers or through partnerships with SASSA.
Apart from these programs, retail outlets give discounts to the aged, while health clinics could be mobile or at fixed locations to assist pensioners. Via anticipatory behavior, make sure R2,315 grant provisions go towards your well-being come August.
